First Prize: New York – Random House

Erika majored in Japanese studies, economics and communications at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. As a participant in Talent Meets Bertelsmann 2012 and a member of the winning team, she tells us about her trip to New York.

Friday, October 19, was the long-awaited day to claim our prize. We boarded a plane and were soon on our way to New York!

We had barely arrived in the “city that never sleeps” when our busy program began, organized by Johanna Scheffer from Bertelsmann. It included a cruise on the Hudson River along the shore of Manhattan and tickets to a Broadway musical (Chicago), followed by a trip to the Top of the Rock observation deck for a view of New York’s skyline. Even the weather cooperated! We took advantage of our free time to stroll along the High Line, an elevated freight rail line that has been transformed into a public park, and go to shopping on Broadway. On our last evening we went out for a fabulous steak dinner, then to a rooftop bar to finish off the day with drinks and a view of the city.

The much-awaited last item on our agenda was a visit to Random House, Inc., on Broadway, where breakfast was waiting for us. Speakers discussed topics like “publishing/traditional publishing”, “digital marketing” and “digital applications”, which gave us greater insight into the Random House publishing company and its activities. We discussed everything from the surprise bestseller Fifty Shades of Gray to the digitization of the publishing industry. The experts were very generous with their time and answered all of our questions.

It was a unique four-day experience. I had a wonderful time in New York – lots of fun, a multitude of new impressions, good food and sunny weather. What’s more, I was able to share the trip with my inspiring teammates. Once again, Bertelsmann demonstrated that it is an exceptionally dynamic, professional, multi-faceted and congenial enterprise. Thank you!
